Tuesday
Latisha probably knew special access to her office would ease my pain about getting kicked out of practice. But best of all, the office gave Harmony, Mello, and me a place to hide away from all the comments about our wearing Makayla Simmons band T-shirts two days in a row. Wearing anything two days in a row pretty much breaks every law of fashion known to the human race â but shirts with her name on them? Blech!
So on Tuesday afternoon, I stood at the student council office doorway with Harmony and Mello. I fumbled for Latishaâs key, trying not to drop my armload of wooden stakes, metal spikes, and rope.
Mello eyed my supplies suspiciously. âIâm not sure what kind of advertising youâve got in mind,â she said. âI thought weâd be making posters.â
âWe are,â I assured her, handing her the stuff so I could open the door. âBut of course they wonât be ordinary, blah posters.â I turned the key in the lock until I heard it click.
âIâve never been in here,â Harmony said as we entered the room. We could tell it was just an ordinary classroom, but the walls were lined with chairman-of-the-board-type desks with officersâ names on them. Harmony stopped in front of the first desk. âWoo-hoo, this is where Chaz Keppler does his lofty work.â
Mello fiddled with a collection of Happy Meal toys next to the nameplate that read, Latisha Punch, Secretary. âWow. This is, like, serious. I didnât know student council members each get their own desk.â
âOnly the officers do,â I corrected. âAnd get this, they donât even call themselves student council. They shorten it so it sounds like, stu-co.â
Harmony laughed. âThank you, Miss In-the-Know. So when do you plan to give interclub president Keppler the boot?â
âChaz? Heâs great. Why would I try to get rid of him?â
Mello crossed her arms and leaned back against Latishaâs desk. âEveryoneâs talking about it, Trin. In one week youâve done more to get the clubs involved and excited than Chaz has done in a year.â
âOh, whatever.â Afraid my face might show how much the comment pleased me, I walked to the back of the room. âIt looks like the supplies are back here. Letâs get started.â
âTrinâs ignoring us,â Mello said, following me. âShe doesnât want to be just interclub president. Sheâs holding out for the big-cheese title.â
Harmony blocked my path. She held her fingers up to frame my face. âHow about Trin Adams, stu-co president? It fits. Youâd do a great job running the whole school.â
Mello nodded. âYouâd get the votes too. With this miracle youâre pulling off, the whole student body adores you.â
I wanted to ask for details. Tell me what youâre hearing. What wonderful things are people saying about me? Instead I said, âYouâre very sweet, but I donât want to be president. I donât even want to be on stu-co. Look, they have poster board in every color. Letâs use silver.â
Harmony took the pieces I handed her. âAt least tell us what it feels like to be everyoneâs favorite person.
